Conflagration and Immolation in the Hebrew Bible
Fire is a powerful force in the Hebrew Bible. It is a symbol of theophany, marking the presence of God. It wreaks punishment as it falls from the sky or erupts from the earth. Fire is an agent of the miraculous, and a central element of Israelite worship in the biblical period. In this course we will examine biblical episodes marked by fire, and discover the astonishing range of positive and negative resonances embedded in this powerful element. This study group has a high class size capacity.
